MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) – Iota is now a category 3 hurricane and is expected to increase to a category 4 hurricane before landfall in Central America early this week. Central America will be dealing with another major hurricane just a few weeks after Eta.
Iota continues to hold an impressive symmetrical shape. As organized as Iota is the storm will consume the warm waters and favorable environment for rapid intensification. Iota holds a strong cat 1 strength and is expected to only get stronger.
Iota is the 30th named storm of the 2020 season. This is the farthest we have ever gone through the Greek Alphabet. The storm will continue on a westward track though the weekend and early next week. Iota will likely become a major hurricane before making landfall in Central America. This is an area that continues to recover for Hurricane Eta.
After making landfall, the storm will fall apart over the mountainous terrain of Nicaragua and Honduras. Iota poses no threat to the U.S.
Tropical Storm Theta is also not a threat to the United Sates and is expected to dissipate over the eastern Atlantic Ocean in the next few days. We are also watching another area in the Caribbean that right now, has a low chance for development within 5 days. It is too early for any more details, but it is just something we are watching.
